Spider Veins
Spider Veins are abnormally dilated blood vessels in the skin and are red or blue in color. They may appear on the legs, face, chest, arms and back. Although spider veins are not usually symptomatic, the feeder veins deeper in the skin can cause discomfort.
Sclerotherapy is the mainstay for treatment of spider veins. A mild detergent solution is injected to collapse the veins. A promising variation of treatment, foam sclerotherapy, is created from the basic solution. This allows a reduced concentration of solution and a more durable, effective result.
Reticular veins
Spider veins grow from reticular veins. These vessels are deeper in the skin and appear blue or green giving the area of leg a marbled appearance. To effectively treat spider veins these "feeders" are also injected. If left untreated, more spider veins develop and leg discomfort may begin to occur. Likewise, if the even deeper vein (greater saphenous) is dysfunctional, its treatment will prevent the growth of more reticular and spider veins.
At the Minnesota Vein Center, you will find the treatment for spider and reticular veins to be efficient and comfortable. Micro-injection techniques and advanced solutions have replaced the older saline injections. While this procedure is quick (a 15-30 minute session) it may require several visits to complete. You may return to a normal routine soon after treatment.
