The VenaSeal™ Closure System

VenaSeal™ uses a remarkable, proprietary adhesive that is dispensed along the diseased vessel through a thin catheter.

As the catheter is pulled back a minute amount of medical adhesive is released and stretches along the course of the vein. A mild external pressure is applied to the skin surface promoting the vessel walls to coapt (joining the walls together.) The backward blood flow (reflux) is eliminated and the diseased vessel closes immediately. Over time, as in other ablation procedures, the vein is reabsorbed by the body. A band-aid is immediately placed on the access site and the procedure is completed in approximate 30 minutes.

There are several advantages to the procedure. There is no need for (local) tumescent anesthesia, therefore no need for multiple needle sticks. The procedure does not require thermal or chemical ablation and patients experience minimal or no discomfort. No dressing (except a bandaid) and no compression stockings are required. These advantages allow patients a rapid return to physical and regular activities.

CoolTouch CTEV ™ Endovenous Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins

As a cutting-edge provider, we utilize advanced laser technology for the treatment of varicose veins at the Minnesota Vein Center. The CoolTouch CTEV ™ is and endovenous laser that uses light waves to eliminate varicose veins.

With the CoolTouch CTEV, a small fiber is inserted into the varicose vein. The laser is activated and as the fiber is pulled back through the vein, it gently heats and safely closes the vein. Once the vein is closed, the blood that was circulating through the vein is re-routed to other healthy veins.

The CoolTouch CTEV procedure in minimally invasive and is performed in the clinic. There are no incisions, scars or bruising and since the access site is so small no sutures are necessary. You will be able to resume light routine activity the next day and athletic or strenuous activities within several days to a couple of weeks depending upon your specific case.

Venefit Endovenous Radiofrequency Treatment for Varicose Veins

Radiofrequency Ablation (Venefit®)

The radiofrequency ablation, also known as the Venefit ® technique, is another minimally invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of venous insufficiency and varicose veins. The procedure is performed in the clinic and also takes less than an hour. Local anesthesia, a numbing agent is used along the leg area to be treated.

A small IV catheter is inserted near the patient’s knee and a slender catheter is then inserted through the IV and into the vein. Electrodes inside the catheter are heated by radio-frequency energy. The catheter delivers this heat to the vein wall, causing it to collapse and seal shut. After the vein is closed, the remaining healthy veins take over and continue their normal function. After the catheter is removed, compression stockings are applied to the leg. Most patients resume normal activity immediately.

The patient will return a few days later for ultrasound examination to ensure complete closure of the treated veins. The patient will continue to wear compression stockings for a variable number of days. This procedure is sometimes performed in combination with foam sclerotherapy treatment of remaining varicose vein branches.

ClariVein ® Catheter System

The newer specialty catheter ClariVein® is also available at Minnesota Vein Center. To close the insufficient vein causing varicosities, this minimally invasive technique does not require thermal energy.


This option uses a combination of mechanical “irritation” and sclerosing solution to seal off the vein permanently. ClariVein is a form of endovenous therapy that introduces the treatment device (a very thin flexible wire-type catheter) into the vein itself. The tiny hollow wire performs two functions – one is to disturb the inside lining of the vein, the other is to deliver the sclerosant solution.

Advantages with the ClariVein technique are many. There is no need for multiple needle-stick injections of anesthesia (numbing) medication along the treated area. The treatment time is shortened and patients have very minimal discomfort. There is also reduced risk of tissue injury, less bruising and the treated vein is closed permanently.

An ultrasound assessment will identify if the vein to be treated is suitable for the ClariVein procedure. Patients with very tortuous or twisted veins, allergies to sclerosants or patients with a history or deep vein thrombosis are usually not candidates for this treatment modality.

Patients are instructed to wear compression stockings as directed and to walk intermittently following their procedure. ClariVein’s effectiveness and no recovery time makes it an attractive solution for superficial venous disease or vein conditions.

Ambulatory Microphlebectomy

This is a method of removing large surface varicose veins. It is performed in the office under local anesthesia. Through tiny, needle-size punctures, veins are manipulated out of the skin. The incisions do not need any stitching or suturing, and generally do not leave any obvious scars. This procedure takes about one hour. A bandage is worn for several days compression stockings are worn for one week following this procedure.

Pre and Post Treatment

Ultrasound-guided chemical endovenous ablation

Abnormal functioning veins that are not visible on the surface to the naked eye are injected with a solution (“sclerosant”) with the guidance of ultrasound. This procedure takes 20 – 30 minutes. Normal activity can usually resume the day of the procedure.
