The answer is yes, venous diseases and varicosities can be hereditary. This is the most common question asked in clinic. But varicose veins are also just very common. Up to 50% of Americans will develop venous insufficiency or varicose veins in their lifetime. While heredity is a major risk factor, other risk factors for varicose veins include, age, number of pregnancies, female hormones, standing professions, obesity and others. While we have little control over many of these risk factors, often reducing long periods of standing, increasing activity or exercise and maintaining a healthy weight, may have dramatic effects on varicosities. The use of compression stockings can help minimize the pain of varicose veins. So you may not be able to blame your parents for varicose veins entirely, but since at least some of the varicosities may be from lifestyle issues, there are simple lifestyle changes that you can do to alleviate this progressing health problem. Our focus at Minnesota Vein Center is to design a specific treatment for your individual needs. We look for a multifaceted approach to vein disease that addresses each patient’s individual concerns.
